Apple Wants To Turn Your iPhone Into a Smart Display With iOS 17, Putting The Always-On Display to Good Use

We are less than two weeks away from Apple's WWDC 2023 event and details on iOS 17 keep coming in. We have previously covered that Apple is planning to revamp the Control Center and offer a boatload of new fresh apps for users in the upcoming update. Today, we are hearing that the company is planning to make the iPhone 14 Pro's Always-On display to good use by transforming it into a smart display with iOS 17. In a new Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to turn your iPhone into a smart display with the launch of iOS 17. The upcoming update was initially speculated to revolve around "maintenance" but later reports suggested that iOS 17 will be a major update with major changes expected on the Lock Screen as well as the Control Center .
It was previously reported that the company is working on a smart display similar to the Amazon Echo Show or the Google Nest Hub. While there are no release timeframes in sight, the company is planning to introduce one bit of the segment with iOS 17 in the coming weeks. The smart display mode on the iPhone would potentially be available on iPhone models with an Always-On display. Currently, only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max features an Always-On display. By the time iOS 17 is released to the general public, iPhone 15 Pro models would also be launched.



Apple is working on a smart display interface for iPhone that potentially works in landscape mode. The company could implement the feature with certain conditions. For instance, a smart display in iOS 17 can be activated when the iPhone is connected to a power source or placed on a wireless charging mat. Another possible condition could be the use of a MagSafe charging stand where the iPhone would be placed horizontally.
The smart display approach on the iPhone could take advantage of upgraded widgets in iOS 17. The news of the feature also indicates that the company is potentially working on interactive widgets. You can easily get yourself a MagSafe charger and place it on your nightstand. The iPhone will serve to be a pretty good smart display that works seamlessly with HomeKiy devices.
