MediaTek & NVIDIA Join Forces To Bring The Latter’s GPU Chiplets To Automotive SoCs For A Revamped Experience

An earlier rumor was doing the rounds, stating that MediaTek and NVIDIA would create a new mobile SoC  featuring a brand new GPU design. While both entities have formed a new business relationship, it is for a different purpose, with Computex 2023 revealing that new GPU designs and its respective technologies will eventually be found in automotive chipsets.
NVIDIA CEO says its GPUs and AI technology, paired with MediaTek’s chipsets, will deliver a brand new experience for all automobile categories
The partnership of the two companies was announced today at a Computex press conference that featured MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang. According to Huang, the latest tag-team will bring new experiences for users in various automobile categories, hinting that MediaTek’s chipsets will be found in both affordable and luxurious cars.
“AI and accelerated computing are fueling the transformation of the entire auto industry. The combination of MediaTek’s industry-leading system-on-chip plus NVIDIA’s GPU and AI software technologies will enable new user experiences, enhanced safety and new connected services for all vehicle segments, from luxury to entry-level.”
The exact chipset model name, or its specifications have not been shared in the latest press release, but the information states that it will be a part of the MediaTek Dimensity Auto range. What will change is the operating system running on those infotainment systems. The new NVIDIA DRIVE OS will be integrated with these systems, while also running DRIVE IX, CUDA and TensorRT software technologies.

Apart from improving the in-cabin convenience and experience level, the vehicle’s safety functions will also see an upgrade. With the latest partnership, more of these infotainment options will become available to car makers, allowing them to bring the NVIDIA DRIVE platform to their products.
Sharing the expertise from its Dimensity lineup of chipsets running in Android devices, MediaTek’s Dimensity Auto has branched out, introducing new features such as Cockpit, supporting smart multi-displays, high-dynamic range cameras and audio processing. This latest team-up can also mean that the development of a high-end smartphone chipset running a new GPU design is possible, but that will be a discussion for another day.
