Feline-Focused Game ‘Stray’ Is Coming To The Mac, Announcements Comes Less Than A Year After Official Release

Adoption of games on the Mac will definitely be a slow and painful process, but there is some progress, especially for those who wish to play the adventure game called ‘Stray,’ where you play as an unnamed cat trying to traverse its way through a dystopian landscape. Previously launched on July 2022, the title has been announced for Apple Silicon models and will likely take advantage of the company’s imaging technologies to help deliver a playable experience.
Stray will likely use Apple’s MetalFX upscaling technology to churn out better frames on various Macs
Publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer BlueTwelve Studio have announced that the game is coming to the Mac, and thanks to Apple’s Metal 3 API, those running the company’s custom silicon will be able to enjoy the title once it is officially released. It is also likely that the developer will benefit from Apple’s MetalFX to help push the frames of Stray, but we also have to note that unlike Resident Evil Village, which launched for the Mac on October 2022, Stray is not notably demanding.
We have tested the game on various gaming hardware, ranging from a laptop GTX 1660 Ti to a laptop RTX 3070 and all the way to a desktop RTX 3080 Ti, and we can conclude that Stray runs smoothly on all GPUs. Both the developer and publisher have not commented on how the game will perform on different Apple Silicon versions, but we can say with some certainty that you will have to own at least an M1 Pro MacBook Pro to get decent performance from the title.
Irrespective of the compute performance, Apple’s custom SoCs have yet to deliver gaming performance that rivals decent gaming laptops, and that is understandable, seeing as how the company’s Macs are geared towards professionals first and gamers second. However, the company has potentially lost out on millions of sales due to this lack of focus, but with announcements like this, we can see that some things are going in the right direction, albeit quite slowly.

At this time, Stray is going for $30 on Windows, but there is no information on how much the game will cost when it is officially available for macOS. Annapurna Interactive and BlueTwelve Studio have not provided a concrete launch date for the game, and neither has mentioned a price tag. For now, we will advise Mac owners to wait patiently for its release, and while they are at it, they can check out our gameplay above and comprehensive review  to see if it is worth their time.
