Google Photos Can Tag Your Face By Just Looking At The Back Of Your Head And It’s Pretty Crazy

There is no denying that Google Photos has become the de facto gallery app for a lot of people. This goes for both the Pixel users that get to enjoy this as a stock app and a lot of other people on Android who are actively using the app. So, of course, Google has done something good with the app, right? Well, one thing the search engine giant is really proud of is AI. Don't get it? The company mentioned AI over 140 times during the Google I/O 2023, less than a month ago, and at least the Photos app is taking benefit from it as we now have a report that the app can face-tag people just by looking at the back of their heads.
Google Photos facial recognition becomes even stronger thanks to AI, but should we worry about it?
The feature was discovered by Rita El Khoury of Android Authority when she realized that Google Photos is now tagging her husband in all the photos that she's taken of her husband, and in some of the photos, he had his back turned towards the camera. Of course, the feature is not fully fleshed out as mentioned in the source, but the fact that the app is able to do it with such accuracy kind of makes you wonder just how accurate it will be in the future.
The source has also mentioned that the Google Photos app automatically started detecting the back of her husband's head and started tagging him in the pictures. Thankfully, the app knows it can be wrong, and there is an option that would let you right that wrong, but still, it is a pretty interesting implementation. Considering how Google is pretty focused on AI, this certainly seems like one of the features that would save people a lot of hassle.

Now, it is obvious that the feature is going to get better as time goes by, and it will keep learning because that's what AI is all about. This also indicates that soon, Google Photos users will not have to worry about manually tagging multiple people in the pictures as the app should be able to take care of the whole situation on its own, making it a lot more functional than before. I cannot say much about when it will become the perfect facial recognition system, but it is safe to say that in its current state, it is already pretty powerful.
Do you think this feature should be an essential part of Google Photos, or can you do without having such a powerful and sort of scary AI-powered feature? Let us know in the comments below.
